A Week in Risk and Project Management: Arthur's Work Experience with Ubique

We recently welcomed Arthur to Ubique Risk Management for a week of work experience, giving him a first-hand look at what it takes to deliver risk and project management services across sectors as varied as nuclear, transport, and defence. Here, in his own words, Arthur shares what he learned.

Building the foundations

I recently completed a week of work experience with Ubique Risk Management, and I am incredibly grateful to have learnt more about the fascinating work that Ubique does. During my week, I completed a range of e-learning courses online, covering topics from equality in the workplace to fire safety awareness. This has allowed me to build my CV, and proved hugely beneficial in itself. I also attended group sessions where current projects were discussed, giving me an early sense of the scale and variety of work Ubique takes on.

On site at St Helens Bus Interchange

One of the highlights of my week was visiting the St Helens Bus Interchange site, one of Ubique’s live projects. After completing my site induction, Chloe, a project manager, gave me a tour and explained what was happening at each stage of the works. I found this day particularly interesting, as it showed me just how much planning goes into a project of this kind, and how different areas of expertise come together to deliver it successfully.

Highways and transport improvements in Lancashire

Hildana, also a project manager, walked me through the steps involved in the ongoing highway and transport improvements taking place in Lancashire. This included looking at project design drawings, ranging widely in complexity, as well as the timelines in place for completion. Like my visit to St Helens, this reinforced just how much careful planning underpins every project Ubique delivers.

Marketing and stakeholder engagement

Rob, a business marketing executive, talked me through how Ubique engages with its stakeholders and how the business markets itself. This was a really enjoyable part of the week, as it introduced me to a side of the business I hadn’t considered before, but which is fundamental to how Ubique operates.

Understanding risk management

I was also introduced to the risk management work Ubique carries out, particularly for nuclear sector clients. Kev and Matt, both risk management specialists, took the time to explain this to me in detail, giving me a much clearer picture of what risk management involves in such a highly regulated environment.

Reflections on the week

Altogether, this placement has helped shape my future plans, giving me a far more well-rounded view of what a career in risk or project management could look like. It also gave me my first real insight into an office environment, helping me understand what kind of workplace would suit me best going forward.

Throughout the week, everyone at Ubique was genuine, friendly, and generous with their time, making sure no question went unanswered. That made my week not just useful, but genuinely enjoyable, and I felt at ease from start to finish.

I would highly recommend a work experience placement with Ubique to anyone interested in risk or project management. You’ll come away with a real wealth of knowledge and experience to take with you.
